This region is blessed with high average hours of sunshine. However, with very few beaches (mostly mangrove coastline), the Sunshine Coast does not have a great deal of accommodation options. The exception is the beautiful Nananu-i-Ra island off the north-western tip, and resort's situated on the main island overlooking Nananu-i-Ra.
What to see and do ...
The Sunshine Coast is a rural region dominated by sugar cane plantations. At Vatukoula there is a vast gold mine, and there are several provincial market towns such as Ba and Rakiraki.
Ask in Nadi about guided tours in this area .. not easily found, but well worth it for the adventurous who wish to explore the region, with includes Fiji's highest peak, Tomainivi.
The departure point for Nananu-i-Ra island is Ellington Wharf, and boat transfers are usually available. Nananu-i-Ra has some good beaches .. the island is not too large and one may walk around it in less than half a day. There are a number of good dive operators in this area.
Getting There
The drive from Nadi International Airport right along the coast to Rakiraki takes about 2 hours and, with the scenic mountain ranges to the interior and rolling hills along the coastal road, is a very pleasant drive. There are a number of hire car companies based at Nadi International Airport.
